Why are you wanting to reformat? Open the drive - press CTRL A and then
CTRL D and everything gets deleted. Clean drive ready for use again.

Perhaps I missed something - You stated that everything was OK *until you
try to format* - then it tells you it is unable to format??? Go back to the
'everything is OK" part and forget the formatting. Did your attempt to
format cause the USB Flash drive to stop working? What brand Name is the
Flash drive you are working with?

Have you checked the USB flash drive vendor's web site ?

Have you unlocked the drive ? It may be set to read-only.

Good Luck !

Thomas, are you talking a flash card you put in the drive? Not the drive
itself? If it a flash card, like fits in a camera, you must format it in
FAT - not FAT32. Though you should still be able to format in FAT32 & it
will work as a storage thingy your computer can see, your camera can't
recognize it.

But why you can't format is beyond me.

I too have a flash drive that is unformatted. Because I followed a previous
post that suggested formatting the drive might eliminate another error
condition. Well it didn't, and it won't format, and now the dongle is, well,
defunct. Using FAT didn't work either. The initial error occurred after
copying 250 to 350 MB of data. Then windows XP comes back saying that the
device is write protected. Kingston Data Traveler KUSBDTI/512KR does not
have write protection. Their website states so, and has no further
information on write protect errors.

When I try to format, Win XP says that it doesn't work because the drive is
write protected. I've tried all three formats, with and without quick
format, and will return the device tonight.
