USB Flash drive

Problem solved.
Thank you Paul. The Avast antivirus program was shutting down the hard drive
when I plugged in the memory stick. I shut down Avast and plugged in both
sticks and both worked as they should. It looks like I will need to find a
new antivirus program if I'm to use these drives.

Until my retirement I have worked on machinery all my life and never got
over how great it feels to fix a problem.

Thanks again.

Strangeness...
I run Avast! and have never had a problem with USB use on a number of
computers over the years.

Before you give up on Avast!, try uninstalling it completely

(with Revo
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html..)

and reinstall.

Avast has been good to me, I recommend it to those who ask me what to use.

I too have been happy with Avast.
I found on the Standard Shield screen, customize, a check box for "scan
diskette boot sectors".
I unchecked it and now all is well. I no longer need to shut down Avast to
use the pen drive.

No problem with Avast 5 and have been using USB stick quite a bit, with the
option to scan removable media enabled.

That leaves me at a loss to explain the malfunction.
Inserting the USB stick caused the hdd to shut down in the beginning. I
tried several times. I bought a new USB stick and it caused the hdd to shut
down. Paul suggested it might be caused by antivirus software attempting to
protect the computer from viri on media. I shut down Avast and the sticks
worked perfectly. Yesterday in searching for a setting in Avast that might
be causing this, I found the
"scan diskette boot sectors" check box and unchecked it and both sticks
continued to work well.

I have not tried rechecking the box and plugging in the thumb drives and
don't really want to as this problem caused me to have to reactivate Windows
XP twice and do System Restore once.
