USB Flash drive - driver problem

New Compaq laptop XP Home SP2

When I insert a USB 2 flash drive or an MP3 player, I see,
'Windows has detected new hardware'. I let it run through the
wizard, it appears to find the necessary driver to install but at
the end it reports a problem - missing file or file could not be
detected. However, the drive then shows in Explorer as mass
storage device E: and works perfectly.

The next time it's plugged in, I'm back to the 'Windows has
detected new hardware again'. If I don't let it run through the
wizard (and fail!), the drive will not appear in Explorer).

I should appreciate suggestions for a solution. I have a Windows
XP Home SP2 installation CD and a Drivers CD for the laptop, plus
access to another new desktop PC from which to copy files if
appropriate.

TIA
