If your system BIOS supports USB devices (legacy) you can turn it on
from there without the loading of special drivers. If the BIOS does
not support USB devices, then you will have to load drivers for your
external hard drive.
You do that in config.sys which should be on the boot disk used to
boot to DOS. I use a Win98 boot disk to load the USB drivers. You
didn't mention whether your external hard drive was USB 2.0 compatible
or not.
I might mention that Ghost is very fussy about USB 2.0 external hard
drives. It may work, or it may not - depends on the drive and the
drivers. I haven't had much luck with mine. However, True Image
from Acronis (
www.acronis.com) works just great to make the image and
also to restore. Drive Image 2002 from Powerquest likewise has some
difficulty with external USB devices. I understand that Drive Image
7.0 works better.
