USB drives not recognized in "My Computer"

This problem just developed.
USB drives such as flash and Western Digital Passport are no longer
recognized in "My Computer".
However they are recognized under Hardware Devices and by my Disk Management
program.
Please help. Thank you.

use disk management to assign the drive a letter

Thanks for the reply but a drive letter assignment is not the answer. A
non-conflicting drive number has been assigned.
