usb drive while booting

If I have a USB drive connected when booting, the system will not boot. Acts
different with a thumb drive & a freeagent Seagate drive. But either one
causes a boot failure. Anyone got any ideas? TIA

Don't do that.

Yep...I agree.
Once in a while I see a machine that simply will not boot with certain USB
devices attached...
so we simply don't plug them in until the machine has booted up

Yes, this happens sometimes.

It may be a problem with the port on the motherboard, which isn't very
fixable, or with the BIOS, which may be updatable; but in any case, you just
need to disconnect those drives while rebooting.

Set your BIOS not to boot from USB (change boot order)

This has often been blamed on Windows XP, but in my opinion it is a problem
with some BIOSs (as the issue occurs before Windows even speculates on the
possibility of loading). IMHO it occurs because the BIOS thinks that the
external media is bootable when in fact it isn't and just sits and sulks
that it can't find a Master Boot Record.

No, my machine doesn't have usb boot capability. My first Sandisk Cruzer
Micro caused problems, later micros (the nice ones that retract) seem
ok. Didn't see a problem with a pny unit.

See my post, I do get to winxp, but slow and doesn't work right, forget
the details.

So you are the OP?

Which post, in this thread you only have 2 posts not explaining anything.

That's because you never gave any. Your only other post never mentioned
anything about XP.
