usb device problems

i have two xp computers on a wireless network using usb
wireless adaptors. each computer has one other usb device
(broadband modem and printer) all on the rear usb ports.
everything was working fine until i bought a pentax optio
digital camera and plugged into the front port of
computer#1 and got a "usb device has malfunctioned"
message. plugging into the rear port was no problem - the
thing worked immediately.

i checked the wiring on the usb header and the D+ and D-
wires are reversed compared to the mobo manual. when i
switched them, rebooted and plugged in the camera i got
nothing - the device wasn't even recognised. i've tried
uninstall/reinstall on the usb hubs/controllers but all
that's happened is that my wireless adaptor won't work
now!! the device installs ok and when configured comes up
as working but after a few seconds it disconnects and
won't reconnect. device manager mostly says the device is
working ok but i have seen a code10 error message if i
check straight after booting up.

throughout all this my modem works no matter what. i
could unplug, put it in the dishwasher, reconnect and it
would work fine but the wireless adaptor - no way. i also
plugged the camera into the other computer (no driver
installed) and i got an "unknown usb device" message as
expected. at the same time though, the wireless adaptor
icon disappeared from the system tray and the adaptor
disappeared from device manager. when i unplugged and
rebooted it came back working fine.

i would really appreciate general advice on how my usb
system is working (or not) as well as any suggested fixes.

No, not yet. I've been advised to do that and clear the
BIOS but I wanted to get a "total solution" to the
problem rather than tackle it piecemeal. Should I do
rewire and clear BIOS as afirst step?

Yes, that's sounds like a plan.

OK I'll do that (tomorrow-it's 11pm here). Any thoughts
on the other aspects of the problem esp. why the wireless
adaptor disappears on computer#2 when the camera is
connected?
