hello,
I have an older computer. A pentium 800. about 7 or so years old.
I have 2 USB connections. Old USB connections, not USB 2.0.
2 questions:
1) I bought a HD and external USB case. The first time I plugged it in, it
worked fine. as a second drive.
now when i connect, I get a message to install software. Without
installing, it will not work.
when i install it, I get a warning that it is not XP certified.
but I do anyway. and still cannot connect.
i did buy a cheep external case. and no software came with it.
is there anything i can do to make it connect?

when i connect the HD to my brand new laptop, it works fine.
both are running XP SP2.

2)
i bought a 4 USB 2.0 card. I plug it into the motheboard slot. and it does
not work.
do you think there is something wrong with the card?
will a usb 2.0 card not work in an older computer/motherboard?

thanks for any help

It may be your USB chipset. Some are more 'compatable' with devices than
others. Don't mess around. Buy a new controller card with USB2- they are
faster so you'll benefit that way, and they aren't expensive. And you won't
see the drive if the drive letter it assigns has been hidden by your
settings, make sure no drive letters are hidden by the OS. Does anything
show in the device manager? Any yellow ? symbols? .........

It is always possible to get a faulty card. Not being able to see or try it
makes it difficult for anyone in a newsgroup to tell you if it is
faulty......

It should work- if not faulty. Try a different slot, make sure it is seated
properly, check your BIOS settings, try the wizard for detecting new
hardware, try looking on your board makers website under Support.

I have a USB 2 card in a Pentium 3 550. It works.
