usb conflicting with SATA

Paul

Just installed new WD 120SATA on existing Gigabyte 8IG1000 pro
motherboard. My problem is that I have no power apparent

After inserting USB2 powered scanner (Mustek).

The PC power supply is a 450w True Power.

It is as if PC is switched off at the wall.

XP(SP2) will boot fine with just USB mouse, Printer and CFlash

Reader and when scanner is unplugged.

This is definately a hardware problem as I can use the scanner

after the system has booted.

I have flashed the BIOS using Gigabytes Flash Utility which fixed

POST delay time and annoying clicking noises from the hard drive.

Gigabyte state on there site that no usb leads/devices other than

their own should be used with SATA. This does not make sense,

can't I use both SATA with USB2, or is there a problem with this

Drive/Scanner combination.

The entire system was working fine with Segate IDE 5400 running

Windows ME.

Any sugestions on overcomming this problem would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks for all the replies............................

This drive developed lots of clicking noises, even with SATA cable removed
and
has been replaced.
