USB boot via VMware

Dietmar

Hi all,

I have no success to install XP as a virtual OS via VMware on a USB
device.

I can choose the USB device for install via VMware, but the wonderfull
slipstream XP CD "says" then, that there is no harddrive ,where it can
install itself.

So the only possibility (I thought at the moment  ) for VMware
that is remaining is, to put a ready VMware Windows XP Professional.vmx
on a USB device and try to start it from there.

But I have not enough knowledge about VMware, how to achieve this.
So, any help is welcome.

I have a normale XP SP1 Professional.vmx image from Vmware, stored in
"Eigene Dateien".
Can this be edited ^^ in any way from outside or only until if it is
running?

Nice to hear from you
Dietmar

PS: The reason, why I try to use VMware is simple. If this is possible,
you can run your compi nearly without the original Bios.
But there is no USB boot option in the virtual Phoenix Bios of VMware.

Dietmar,

How is it going with getting XP Pro / XPe booting from a USB flash disk?
Where are you keeping the running record of your setup instructions?

Hi Sean,
I use now the tool vmware-mount.exe
which can be downloaded from the homepage of VMare.
With that tool you can edit a VMware image without VMware.
The image is simply mounted as a harddisk, and this can be on a USB
device.
So I succeed with booting from any USB device with any operating
system, simple copy and
past the files and folders from this mounted USB device to a real
other.

But I am not sure, whether I understand your question at all.
Can you please explain it once more?

Nice to hear from you
Dietmar

PS: I tested XP SP1 and XP SP2 this way. I got running generic images
of them, because
the people of VMware build a really powerfull tool.

Magesh,
I welcome Dietmar's posts. He has contributed some very valuable
original work to this newsgroup. You might ascertain this by noting
that Sean Liming, who is a very much more respected and senior member
of this newsgroup than you are, has inquired about Dietmar's work.
