usb autodetect

my windowsxp home does not auto detect usb devices. The device is opened onto
my computer, but does not flash onto screan, asking me for options. In the
case of
of usb flash drives, the drive does not open onto the screen. I need to find
it by going into my c drive, and opening the drive there.
I tried the automatic fix it for disabling selective suspend, but that
didn't fix the problem.
Can anyone help????

Autoplay requires the Shell Hardware Detection service, make sure
it's set to automatic and is running. To access Services, open the
