USB and service pack troubles

Been given an old machine and trying to get it working, two problems:

USB ports do not recognise when hardware is lugged in. If I plug in an MP3
player ,say. The player lights up and goes into usb mode, the PC does not
know it is there. I have tried a registry edit for DisableSelectiveShutdown
(or something similar from the MS pages, but this doe not have any effect.
Also tried a new USB card in the PC - no change either.

Tried system updates and it came up with a list starting with Service Pack
2. This goes through a long process of backing up and installing new files.
Then it stops and says Access Denied and then a long process of putting
everything back. Tried with two user names, the original and a new one,
both computer admionistrator. Any comments? Thanks

This site has specific patches for devices, chipsets, etc. It mentions
WinME but is actually the XP page. Press Ctrl/F and do a Find for your
specific device. Also search for your mobo, etc..

You receive an "Access is denied" error message
when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Tried system updates and it came up with a list starting withSet verbose logging and problem is with .AudioCD - but I cannot change
permissions as decribed as I don't have permission. Possible fault with
registry key...
