USB 2 external HD scanned every bootup. Can it be stopped?

I've added a large (300GB) external HD which performs very well except that
every bootup it is scanned by XP for media type etc.

Is it possible to stop this happening? I have tried all of the usual things
but no luck so far.

Please ignore if this is a silly question.
