USB 2.0 ports stops working

On my IBM T40 Thinkpad with XP home SP2 there is two physical usb-ports which
has been working with 2.0 speeds. But suddenly, I get the message that I
could get higher speeds connecting to an usb 2.0 port. But it is the same
physical ports, and in device manager there is a 2.0 enhanced host controller
with no errors and updated drivers. And my usb units only work with usb 1
speeds.

However, uninstalling all usb devices (as mentioned elsewhere in the forum)
has temporalily restored high speed usb, but alas only for a short while.

How can this problem be corrected permanently?

Well, since there is no replies from the community, I worked along,
Googe'ing on the net and in groups to look for solutions. The problem seems
to be not uncommon, and the solutions deviced are:
1) In device manager, uninstall all usb hubs and controllers and restart.
Fairly easy to do, but with either only short lived succes or not at all.
2) Repair install of winXP. Have not tried for being time consuming, risky
and cumbersome. And with no guarantee of succes.
3) Clean install of winXP. Same as 2) but even more time consuming.

So all this not very encouraging, instead I tried a workaround. For USD 20 i
bought a PC-card with two USB 2.0 ports (Sandberg). This seems to work
