USB 2.0 PCI card slow to transfer files - help please

Brian

I have an on board USB 1.1 on my computer so I brought a USB 2.0 PCI
card so that I could transfer music files to a iPod (portable music
player). I'm finding at times that the files are very slow to transfer
to the iPod and at times there are delays partway through transferring
a song which causes a timeout problem.
I'd welcome any suggestions to help solve this problem.
The USB card is made by NEC and sold by Dick Smith.

I've tried disabling the on board USB 1.1 equipment.
I've shut down any programs running in the background.
I've reinstalled the driver for the card.
I'm using Windows XP with SP2.

#1 is that iPod USB 2.0 compliant? If it is only 1.1, you will not be
able to use the 2.0 speed at all.

#2 is the cable USB 2.0 complint as well? Older cables may not work
well and cause data error if they are forced at 2.0 speed.

#3 using any hub in between? Make sure they are 2.0 as well.

The USB 2.0 card is compliant with USB 2.0 EHCI and USB 1.1 OHCI
standards.
The cable came with the iPod so it's not an old cable.
I don't have a hub.

I do get bursts of high speed file transfer so I know the card can
transfer at high speed. My problem is the delays in transfer.
There will be a pause then the bar graph shows that 25% of the file
has been transferred then another pause of about 15 seconds then the
bar graph shows about 50% of the file has transferred then another
delay. This occurs with files that are only 3 megs in size. Other
times if I'm lucky the file will transfer in less than 2 seconds.

I was going to connect my iPod to the firewire card but after
installing Windows Service Patch 2 my firewire card is no longer
working.

Try another USB port, you can get quirks with some.

Looks like you may well have stuffed up your XP config
somehow and thats what the problem is with USB2 too.

Thanks Ron for your reply
I found that the Generation 4 iPod needed a different iPod firewire
cable and the one I had was only good for the Geration 1 and 2 iPods.

I did try another usb 2.0 port but with no luck.
At least I can use the iPod on my firewire card.
