USB 2.0 flash drive

S

Scott

I just purchased a new PQI USB 2.0 flash drive and inserted into the USB
port of my HP Pavilion PC running on Vista Home Premium. The system cannot
reconise it and asks for driver. The drive states Windows Vista compatible.
I insert it to other XP pcs and Vista pc and all work correctly without any
need of driver. With other USB 2.0 flash drives, they work correctly. It
seems to me the Vista on my pc does not work correctly. Can someone advise
the possible reasons and fixes.

Thanks,

Scott

Did it come with U3 software? That could possibly be the cause. Open Device
Manager and scan for hardware changes. I would return it to the place of
purchase and get something that is know to work, I use SanDisk Cruzer Micro
2.0 GB Enhanced for Readyboost.

Andre,

What is U3 software? The drive does not come with any driver. The system
reconises the drive name, Intelligent, pqi IntelligentStick USB Device but
seems does not work with my computer. It seems my OS is missing something
but other Vista system works ok. Very strange on my HP computer and would
like to call at HP service centre for help.

U3 is a software that comes bundled with lots Thumb drives lately. Its used
to securely synchronize yout files and access on any PC.

I would follow JWs direction and formation the drive on an XP based system
then try connecting it to Vista.

Hello JW,

Thanks for your advice. The drive does not come with any software. The
software needs to download from their website but those relate to
password-protected pc, encrypt file. I tried to format the entire drive in
Fat32 in a pc running Windows XP. It does not help the issue.

I checked your suggested link that fixes to the USB device after hiberation.
My issue seems related to drive reconginiation, not hiberation. I guess the
drivers in Vista OS does not have one for my drive while XP has. This is
not my first time to encounter this issue and my last time it happened on a
flash drive that I bought before Vista luanched. It works on many pcs of
Windows XP without any problem. It seems illogical but it leads the
customers to think in this direction.

Andre,

Thanks for your reply. After launched Vista, I purchased two new flash
drives and both do not have U3 software. Can the C3 software be found on
Microsoft website? All the users of flash drive strongly believe the flash
drive does not need driver since Windows 2000. Obviously, it is not true??

Scott

U3 is a third party software that is distributed by U3, visit
http://www.u3.com for more information. Windows Vista supports Thumbdrives
out of the box, for older versions of Windows, you might need software to
make it communicate the OS, Windows 2000 I believe does not need a driver.

The hotfix fixes a lot of other USB problems besides problems related to
Hibernation I suggest again that you try it.

Actually, this is the newest update for USB core components;

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941600
Cumulative update rollup for USB core components in Windows Vista
October 2, 2007
This article describes an update rollup that resolves some reliability issues in the USB core
components in Windows Vista. You will achieve better reliability in various scenarios by
installing this update.

Michael,

Thanks for your advice. I installed this update following your given link
but no improvement at all. In device manager, yellow exclaimation exists in
other device. Again, it needs corresponding driver. Where do I get the
driver?

Scott,

I'm not sure what the problem may be. Vista should automatically
recognize the flash drive without a problem. Unless, there is some
type of third party software included on the drive. Are you sure there's
no additional software on the flash drive?

Did you reboot after applying the USB update?

With the USB drive plugged in, go into Device Manager and
uninstall it. Pull it out and reboot, then place it back in.

Have you been to the PQI website? What's the exact model
of the flash drive?

Michael,

The PQI model is Intelligent Drive i810 and the name showed on my pc is pqi
IntelligentStick USB Drive. The hardware no is
USB\VID_3538&PID_0054&REV_0100. I guess Vista does not recognize this
hardware no and does not know which driver should be applied. I encountered
similar thing with Bluetooth driver and required to add the hardware no in
configuration file and works correctly.

I have done all standard procedures: reboot, uninstall the failures in
device manager and unplug and re-plug the drive after installating the
hotfix without improvement.

Michael,

Many thanks for your assistance in searching the useful information for me.
I got another website from the packaging without those information. The
software supplied on website is add-on features for flash drive and has no
relationship to the drive recongization issue.

The answer to the question 2 in FAQ is useful to resolve the drive
recongization issue. However, in my last two days, I encountered another
issue due to the given solution of drive recongization. The proposed answer
is to ask me to reinstall the USB controller. Once I reinstalled it, the
system recongize the drive but the system starts to ask for the driver for
lots of built-in hardware: i.e., USB2.0-CRW, multi format card reader, USB
multimedia cordless kit (RF mouse + keyboard - I use the cordless keyboard
but did not use the cordless mouse), Microsoft Trackball Explorer, etc.

I select Cancels and the system spend about 20 minutes to finish all
checking. All hardware are working correctly although I did not install any
driver as instructed (actually I do not have drivers or do not know where
the drivers in the pc). On one hand, I resolve the drive recongzation issue
but brought up another issue.

Regards,

Scott
