USB 2.0 devices not recognized

I have two USB 2.0 devices that are not recognized when I
plug them into any 2.0 port. Configuration:

Biostar M7NCD Pro (nForce2) w/latest BIOS
Athlon XP2500+
XP Pro SP1, current with all updates
MicroSolutions DVD Writer Backpack, latest firmware &
Backpack driver
Smartdisk external Firelite 40GB HD, USB 2.0

This is a new hardware and XP installation. USB devices
were added after all XP patches were installed. The
first time the drives were installed they were detected
and worked properly. Now, however, XP does not recognize
them. They display as Unknown Devices in the Device
Manager. Searching for new hardware does not find them.
Plugging them into a different port just gives me the
error message of "device not recognized". Both drives
work (slowly) if plugged into my USB 1.1 external hub.
Help!

Hi,

Have you used the safely remove icon to remove the
external HDD before unplug it from the USB hub?
If yes, you may have troubles.

Try boot in safe mode and login as administrator, go to
device manager, click universal serial bus controller,
highlight the XXX PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
then right click and select uninstall, click apply and OK
then reboot. After reboot, check that windows has
reinstalled the USB 2.0 drivers and confirm it is working
properly. If the USB 2.0 driver is not auto installed,
install it manually.
Repug the USB device and check again.

Hi,

Sorry, I mean if you have NOT use the safely remove icon
to remove the ext. HDD before unplug it, you may have
troubles.

Thanks, that did the trick! I forgot that the HD's power
brick had fallen and pulled the USB cable out.
Uninstalling the controller immediately fixed the
problem. Thanks again!
