USB 2.0 Device not functioning at a reduced speed

Hi --

I am getting the message:
" The Unknown USB Device is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at
reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port."

I just started to get this message recently. I have been using this external
Hard Drive (Ioemga) and an Apple Ipod (Video IPod Purchased in December) for
months at the higher speed. I also use Norton Ghost to backup my machine at
times. Norton Ghost tells me what speed the drive is working at. I used to be
able to do a backup in about 1 hr, now it takes 4 hrs.

What is weird is that sometimes the drive is working at 2.0 speeds, and
sometimes it is working at 1.1 speeds. Actually in the last week I have not
seen either device work at 2.0, its been 1.1.

Machine: IBM T41 - Model 2374-258
HD: 80 GB/ 1GB RAM
OS: Microsoft XP SP 2.0

I am at a loss as to what to do. I have used the device manager to delete
all the USB devices and rebooted to have Windows add them back again --
several times and it doesnt work.

Please help!

Mario, go back into Device Manager and under USB Controllers look for
Enhanced USB Controllers. Are you using a
Powered USB Hub? If not that might be your problem. I am not familiar with
Thinkpads but if you are depending on the
power provided by the laptop it might not be enough now but that's just a
thought.

Thanks Rich for the response. I am not using a powered USB hub, just the ones
on the laptop. Mmmm... it does pose an interesting question though... maybe
these ports can't handle both the ipod and the external drive.

The following is listed in my device manager currently:

Universal Serial Bus controllers:
- Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
- Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
- Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
- Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
- USB Mass Storage Device
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub
- USB Root Hub

I search google and apparently lots of people are having this problem.
