URLs to local docs much slower opening in IE than using UNC's

If I have a link on a local web site with these properties

file://server1/share/document1.doc

and open from within IE 6 it takes about twice as long as from opening it
using its UNC

i..e

Start/Run \\server1\share\document1.doc

Why would opening from IE be so much slower than from opening in Explorer?

Any ideas?

Is there an IE tweak I can do to speed this up?
