Where does IE store the URL history that appears in the
address bar? and how can I clean it up (in XP)?
Thanks
Daniel

Internet Explorer stores its History in the following location: C:\Documents
and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\History

To clear the History, go to "Tools" --> "Internet Options" --> "General".
Under the "History" heading, click on "Clear History" and that should clear
out the history in IE.

Hope that helps!

This seems to clear out the history but the url address
bar still has all the old URLs (in the drop down list).

Daniel,
These are in a TypedURLs key in the registry. This article explains the
TypedURLs history:
157729 - How to Clear the History Entries in Internet Explorer:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q157729
Removing some or all entries is an easy registry edit.

For an easier, safer removal method, go to
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
and download "DelTypedURL." This INF file will remove all entries.

These two freeware programs will remove some or all entries:
IE Address Bar Editor: http://www.freesoft.fsnet.co.uk/ieedit01.htm
EditURLs: http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/index.htm

Tip: If you type URLs in via File> Open, instead of the address bar, they
aren't saved in the TypedURLs key and you can keep a select few URLs in the
drop-down list.

Also, deleting the History folder will sometimes remove stubborn URLs.
Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm will delete the
History folder (and the index.dat file) and a new one will be created when
you restart.
Or the History folder can be deleted manually:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Hope this helps,
Don
