.URL association errors

Mark Randall

Hi,

Upon a recent installation of god knows what windows updates, and a
subsequent power crash, my .URL files have effectively become useless on all
fronts when dealing with IE7.

Clicking upon a .url file prompts me to download the url file itself,
followed by it opening the print dialog box.

In addition to this, selecting properties no longer brings up the relevant
shortcut options for the .url file.

File association shows .url is linked to IE, I cannot find the full editor /
DDE options etc in the folder options anymore so I cannot look to see what
that is set to or how it is passing arguments to IE.

Could anyone advise on how to restore .url functionality?

Mark,

I had already tried this, and flipping it between IE7 and Firefox. No joy im
afraid.

The dissapearance of the relevant shortcut options in right click >
properties leads me to think this is some error with the handling of .url
files themselves at the shell level, rather than the content therein.

Mark Randall

Hi Mark,

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Internet Explorer
Click OK.

This should automatically fix file type associations.

Hi Ramesh,

Alas no success here either.

I have noted occurances of this bug at:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...&q=internet+shortcut+corrupt#5cfd47878afec90f

I suspect it would help if I could see the actual settings for the .url
extension and its relevant options, rather than the dumbed down interface
vista provides that only lets you select from a list.
