URGENT -- XP Home vs XP Pro - Recovery Console

J

Jeff

I have an XP Home box that requires access to the Recovery
Console.

The problem is that this is a Dell box and the only CD
that they have is a restore CD.

Can I use an XP Pro Recovery Console to repair this system
or do I absolutely have to have an XP Home CD?

Dell computers come with a Dell Reinstallation CD.
Use that CD to install the Recovery Console. One
cannot use a XP Pro CD to repair a XP Home system.

Thank you Carey for your prompt reply.

The problem is that I cannot complete the boot process and
as a result, I cannot restore anything using the existing
system. I need to go into Recovery Console from an
original CD Apparently, I do need an original XP Home CD.
Dell's CD is a RESTORE CD, and will wipe out everything on
the HD, making it look like it was when shipped from the
factory.

I have the documentation from
http://www.mcsc.ms/message873627.html and I believe that
this was written by the same person. Will check out the
link also. Thank you very much.

I am really quite surprised at the number of people that
have experienced this problem after installing an update.
I've patched hundreds of machines and never had this
happen. I patch one friend's PC and ZOIKS!

"Dell's CD is a RESTORE CD, and will wipe out everything on the HD, making

That is incorrect. Dell supplies a Windows installation CD identical to what
you would buy in the store, except that it only installs (legally) on a Dell
computer.

Thank you. I just asked the owner to find every Dell CD
that they have and to bring them in to me. I should be
able to find it. In the meantime, I still have another
copy of XP Home coming.
