URGENT: Windows XP does start up

I've had an antivirus expire a few times and never had any kind of trouble
as long as I did't have it connected to the Internet... but you have to
remove the antivirus anyway so try the System Restore in Safe Mode and
uninstall the antivirus, disable it first to avoid trouble...
Start\Run\type; "msconfig" (no quotes) and hit Enter\go to the Startup tab\
and uncheck all applications that are checked... next click on the Services
tab, and check the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box and uncheck to disable
the antivirus services\uncheck the box again and click Apply and OK... next
go to Contro Panel\Add or Remove programs and remove the antivirus. See if
it now starts normally.

If you have an antispyware application installed use it to scan the system
but if you don't you will have to take the chance and download another
antivirus application. AVG, Avast, Avira, Rising Antivirus are good and
reliable options... and to scan for trojans and spyware install Malwarebytes
Anti-Malware.

Hi:

I ran into a strange problem yesterday. I rebooted the laptop in the morning
and it started to boot fine until "applying computer settings" and then it
automatically logged off and shut off. Since then, I am not able to boot my
laptop. It runs upto "applying computer settings" and keeps logging off again.

Can anyone help? I need to get into my laptop as quickly as possible as it
is my work laptop.

Note:
Two days ago my anti-virus expired and I was lazy not to renew it right
away. Could it be that any virus/spyware doing this? Just wanted to give you
that info so that you take that into consideration while giving suggestions.

Thanks guys.

Boot to Safe Mode (F8 during the 'black screen' portion of a restart, right
after the BIOS screen) The Safe Mode logon will let you log on as the
default "Administrator" account. You may have to create a new user account
that does not try to start that antivirus app. I would also try the normal
account in safe mode, to see if you can disable the antivirus app.

Mark:

After I disable the antivirus app, do you think I can log in normally and
uninstall the anti-virus app? Also, do you think this is indeed caused by
virus or any other issue (hardware or software)?

Thanks for your prompt help.

"Could it be that any virus/spyware doing this?"

It's certainly possible. Your computer can become infected in two
minutes, let alone two days.

Unlikely (but not impossible). The expiration usually just applies to the
virus definition updates. The application should continue to look for those
definitions that are in its database already.
