Urgent help... update...

Hi

I have been able to get a second disk and installed windows xpsp2 and it
boots fine.

I have run scan disk, and norton disk tools and it finds no problems, or bad
sectors, yet still the system will not bood past the inital windows xp
screen (black with logo in center).

The only thing i can think of is that some sort of important system file has
become corrupt, and thats why its no longer booting.

Is there a way to check the integrity of the system files need to boot ? Is
there a tool that can check them?

Would it be ok, to copy *.dll and *.sys files from the new clean xpsp2 over
the old xpsp2 in a hope to perhaps overwrite the possible crap files with
new ones?

Yes. Have your Windows cd handy, then go to Start > Run > and type "sfc
/scannow" (without the quotes, and with a space between the "c" and the
"/" )

This is the System File Checker, it will find any missing or corrupted
system files and prompt you to replace them with good copies from the cd.

The problem is that I can boot my OS using the version of windows i want to
check

I have put a new version of windows onto another HD and can boot from that,
and can see the HD with the stuff version of windows on it, but i figure
this tool, will check the windows files that you booted from, not the files
from another directory/disk

Is that correct ?

What happens at this stage (reboot, hang, or blue screen). Can you boot safe mode or command prompt (with or without safe mode). If not sfc won't help.
