Urgent Help - Connecting to the Internet

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop running on Windows XP Home. It just crashed.
I have reinstalled Windows but now I cannot connect to the internet. The
help desk at Dell advised that I may need to reconfigure the IP address.
How? I am a computer novice and urgently need help.
 
With no indication of How you connect to the Internet, there is no
possibility of giving you any meaningful device.

I'm sorry, but I can't answer your question. I don't know how your
computer connects to the Internet, what happens when you try to
connect, or what type of IP address configuration your Internet
service provider requires.

I recommend that you contact your Internet service provider for help.
They know how to set up a computer to use their service.
