Urgent! DNS and Resubnetting Question

O

OZJ

This weekend we will be converting our network from a Class B to Class
C. I'm going to be updating our Win2K DNS to reflect the new IP
addresses of our mixed Win2K/NetWare environment and converting to
Active Directory Integrated DNS once complete.

Here's what I would like to do.

1.) Manually edit a copy the "ozj.com.dns" file, adding new A records
for each server and creating entries for new devices.

2.) Manually edit a copy the the "X.X.in-addr.arpa.dns" file
adding/updating PTR records as needed.

3.) Delete all the A records created for DDNS client workstations.

4.) Stop DNS.

5.) Restart DNS with the updated *.dns files.

6.) Make sure everything works.

7.) Convert to AD Integrated.

Will this work? Am I missing some huge step that will destroy
everything? I've read that I need to increment the zone serial #. Can
I simply give the updated *.dns files a serial greater than the
previous # or do I need to make sure it's exactly 1 after the most
recent #?

Thanks in advance. I'm new to DNS and I'd appreciate any feedback.

I would not recommend just changing the IP addresses on your DCs or DNS
servers, add the new addresses to the existing interfaces even if on a
different subnet. This will insure connectivity on both IP addresses and
allow you to change the rest of your IP addresses without losing
connectivity. If the addresses are on a different subnet IP range make sure
netmask ordering is enabled on the DNS server.
