UPS WorldShip Software - NO COMPATIBILITY

Is anyone aware of how to get the UPS WORLDSHIP to work with VISTA.

Bottom Line:
Did the beta version of Vista and worked with WORLDSHIP.
Beta Version Ran out.
Bought the Home Basic Upgrade and that does not work because the free beta
version is THE ULTIMATE.
So to keep your files and programs you must buy the ULTIMATE upgrade for
around $300.
Typical MSFT Gimmick to sell software. Cannot rollback to XP so must buy
upgrade or clean install Home Basic which I had to do.
Now UPS WORLDSHIP does not work with VISTA. Which was not aware of. UPS has
informed me that since VISTA IS SO BUGGY and NEW that they have not
effectively been able to compile software capable of working with it and
recommended I use XP for a few years until Microsoft is capable of working
out all the problems with VISTA. Now I am stuck with either not using vista
and just going with XP or use vista and not use UPS to ship all of my
packages.

And yet so many other people have managed to do just that. For software far
more complex than that made by UPS, too.

I'm not saying Vista is blameless or perfect, clearly it isn't, but that is
just a BS excuse from UPS to cover up their own inadequacy. There are
companies out there ranging from massive companies with lots of developers
to small one man band small business software developers that all seem to be
managing to get on with the job, to some degree at least. I'm sure a bunch
of postmen know better than them though.

Or you could, has been explained here countless times as a solution to this
kind of thing, install Virtual PC or VMWare and use a Windows XP virtual
machine for this one reluctant package. I realise that doing a bit of
research and figuring this out for yourself isn't as much fun as ranting and
TYPING RANDOM WORDS IN CAPITALS but it ought to get the job done.

That's UPS's story. In fact it's the other way around. They haven't been
bothered to make their software compatible with Vista and they have had
ample opportunity to do so. Microsoft put out many tools to help software
designers. It's not MSFT fault if they chose not to bother with them.
Meanwhile maybe you can run it in compatability mode with XP SP2?
(Right-click Setup.exe Properties/Compatibility).

UPS Worldship is double flakey. They update the sonofabitch abour eleven
times a week - you'd think they'd get it right eventually.

We've got Worldship running on Win98, Win2K, and WinXP. About 5% of the
time, it causes a re-boot when exiting. Bah.

Your best bet is to find an old 386 with Windows 95, put Worldship on that
and hope for the best.

Of course, the replies you got say that it's UPS's fault. Typical of many
people in here.

Is it also AutoDesk's fault that only one of their '2007' version
programs is guaranteed as 'Vista compliant' and you're on your own with
any other 2007 and earlier versions ? They decided not to go back and
make all older versions Vista 'compliant'.....

But, I digress, you say the UPS package worked in the Vista beta version,
which was 'Ultimate', but not in Home Basic.

Does it STILL work with the RTM Vista 'Ultimate', the real deal, non-beta
?

If it work's with Ultimate and not Home Basic, then .........

Rubbish. UPS Worldship is bug haven...it doesn't even work half the time in
XP so why should it work in Vista...it's UPS's fault entirely.
Considering they charge more than most courier services they should be
better.

Let's think about this...

Most users of Worldship are businesses, and MS's target OS for businesses is
the Business variant. So why would they make you upgrade to Ultimate?
Why would someone who needs to use Worldship be using the cheapest version
of the OS, which is targeted for the home user?

MS made pre-release versions of Vista available for developers to check
compatability out with. Some did, many did not.

FedEx says their software is not compatible with Vista. Does UPS say that
their software is?

What can you do?
First of all, I would recommend if you are running a business, run a
business OS.

1. Check compatability from the software company before you upgrade your OS.
Too late for you
2. Try the compatability modes
3. Download and install VirtualPC, and install an OS in there that your
poorly designed application works in

I think there was a chance Dan was being sarcastic there...

I think there was a chance Dan was being sarcastic there...

I was really trying to see if it works under the released Ultimate.

The OP indicated it worked under Vista beta, which was Ultimate, but not
under RTM Basic.

So is it REALLY the Vista version that matters, or just another application
incompatibility ? Or just the OP's PC ?

I could *possibly* see how it *might* be a beta Vista vs final Vista issue,
but not a final Basic vs. Ultimate

Ah. Good point and my bad, sorry!

Yes, this would only make sense in a vista specific app and thats certainly
not the issue here!

Help!! My XP Dell computer crashed so I bought a new Gateway with Vista Home
Premium. When I tried to load the UPS 9.0 Worldship software, it refered me
to the UPS website which said that they would have a compatible version in
2007. When I called UPS, they sent me to the Microsoft website. UPS has no
Vista support. How can I install Worldship 9.0 on my new computer?

I'm sorry but it is entirely up to UPS to provide a version of their
software that will work on Vista. You can try running it in
compatibility mode (look in Windows Help for instructions using the
search term "compatibility mode") but if it doesn't work, you can't run
it natively in Vista.

If that is the case, you can either return the computer to Gateway for
one running XP or return the computer and purchase a completely
different one running XP from another company.

Another alternative is to run XP as a virtual machine with Vista as the
host using virtualization software such as VMWare (not free but
excellent) or Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 (free). You will need a full
retail or generic OEM version of XP to do this.
