upgradingg from XP home to XP professional

I am wanting to upgrade from XP home to XP professional.
I am unsure as to whether to scrub the existing system
and destroy some of my data - email, URLs or to purchase
an upgrade version and install over the existing XP home
version.

If anyone has had experience with this I would appreciate
a reply.

Data will not be lost during an upgrade but it is recommended that u backup
ur stuff in case problem occurs.
