I had Windows XP Home on my machine and then a freind installed xp pro, one
problem, not a legal copy, while running xppro the system will no longer
accept updates. Can you procure a legal upgrade pkg. and install it over the
existing one or do I have to start from basic guts and rebuild the wole
computer?

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

You could use it to re-install your legitimate license for WinXP Home,
if you like.

After backing up or copying any important personal data files to a
CD or other removable storage media, simply boot from the WinXP
installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create,
and format partitions as part of the installation process. (You may need
to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from
the CD.)
