1. Remove any external hardware, such as attached devices that are not required for setup
(for example, printers, external serial devices, and Universal Serial Bus [USB] devices
other than the primary keyboard).
2. Remove any internal cards that are not required for setup, such as sound cards.
3. Disable items in the basic input/output system (BIOS), such as ports or power management features,
and on-board devices that are not required for setup to complete, such as modems.

Setup stops responding with 34 minutes remaining

I don't recall ever seeing a "percentage" metric during the
installation. Is it stalling at 34 *percent*, or with 34 minutes
"*remaining*?" The difference is crucial. If the former:

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many models
in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class
Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

If the latter, disconnect all USB devices and retry:

Thank you both....I have and am working on the suggestions....This is what
happened....I had WinXP Professional.....but found out that it was a pirated
copy, so I went and bought the program to install again over the pirated
one.....I have unplugged all hardware except keyboard...including the
modem....it tells me it has copied it 100%...but while installing it shells
out and reboots.....took the hard drive out and put it in another
computer.....which it won't find....strange.....got into a setup mode finally
and come up with these errors...."Setup error trying to set system
security."....and...."sys.dll syntax error in manifat/policy file
D:.I386/asms/60.msft/windows/common.control."

Still nothing and clueless......
