I really need some advice about my laptop. I am in desperate need of XP, i
have windows me at the moment which messes up a lot, plus i have just been
bought an ipod that i currently cant use!

My laptop is a dell cpi and as far as i can tell it fits all requirements
for xp. Now i just need to know which upgrade package to buy. Do i get home,
prof, or as i'm a student is the student upgrade best for me?
And will i be able to install it myself? Sorry im a bit of a novice with
stuff like this although im ok with computers on the whole.

Please help me!

Hi
I can certainly understand that you might be confused about the many Windows
options available to you. There are alot.

The first thing I would recommend is to read this article which describes
the different versions of Windows. This gives you a general overview of what
features and capabilities there are for each product.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/default.mspx

The next thing you might want to look at is this page which specifically
addresses student needs and what Windows XP can do for you.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/students/default.mspx

My personal preference is Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2
installed. But then I am technically minded and I want the professional
features offered with Windows XP Professional.

I hope this helps!

If it is available to you; get the academic XP Pro upgrade or Full version.
Not the OEM version if you intend to upgrade and keep you current programs
and settings. Otherwise the upgrade versions of Home or Pro will work.
Make sure before you do anything that you backup important data that is not
available from other media sources. The upgrade will retain your programs
and settings, but there is always the possibility of a failed upgrade.
Study the links posted below and make sure the system is worth upgrading.
Sometime the upgrade costs more than the cost of a new entry level system
with XP already installed.
