upgrading to windows xp professional

Guest

I have a couple of questions before updating from windows xp home edition to
windows xp professional.

I am currently running windows xp home edition service pack 2. I have norton
ghost 10 running on the system and I made a full back up yesterday. I want to
upgrade to windows xp professional so I can use the ASP.net functionality of
visual studio 2003.

my Question is I am not sure what the proper sequence of steps should be to
minimize data loss once XP professional is up and running?

Nothing like making a proper back up of EVERTHING that you don't want to
lose.

Please ignore the remarks made by "Andrew E" as he is ill-informed
and often gives rather poor advice to users regarding upgrades.

An upgrade to Windows XP Pro is a smooth transition will not affect your
current programs or files if you use the following procedure:

1. Purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" [boxed] of Windows XP Professional.
2. Uninstall your antivirus program.
3. Perform a backup of your important documents and files to a CD, DVD, or other backup media.
4. Disconnect all hardware peripheral devices, except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
5. While running Windows XP Home, insert the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and select
the default "Upgrade" setup option. [Do not select "New Installation"]
6. Visit the Windows Update site to download all the critical updates.

Where did you hear that?
The easiest upgrade of all is Home to Pro because they share the same code
base.

why unistall the antivirus program, and what about firewall programs?. will
the back up by norton ghost suffice for the back up of files. What about trhe
device drivers for video and sound cards. Will those be affected, needing to
be reinstalled?

Microsoft says, to install pro from home, one must do a clean installation

Where'd you read that? It's 100% untrue. Any XP Home system can be upgraded
to Pro. The only real hitch is that the upgrade disk being used must be at
the same or higher service pack level as the installation. In short:

Home w/o any SP can be upgraded by Pro w/SP1, SP2, or "Gold"
Home w/SP1 can be upgraded by a Pro w/SP1 or SP2, but not "Gold"
Home w/SP2 cannot be upgraded by a Pro w/SP1 or "Gold", it must be SP2 only

If the disk is not at a high enough service pack level, you will need to
create a slipstreamed version:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

The smart person will backup any critical data to removable media before
attempting any operating system upgrade.

Wrong and by now you should know it. You are deliberately misleading the OP
for some
malicious reason known only by you. You have been repeatedly asked to post
links to your Microsoft source and you will not do so or more likely can't
because it doesn't exist.
Below is the link that lists inplace upgrade paths and the upgrade to Pro
from Home has a YES. This is from Microsoft and has been validated by
myself and many others who have personally performed the upgrade.
Please stop posting this misinformation.

You have posted this here multiple times. Nevertheless it's *completely
false*. It's the easiest and most-likely successful of all possible updates.
There is no special upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP
Professional Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on the box).

You've also been asked multiple times for a citation showing where
"Microsoft says, to install pro from home, one must do a clean installation
of pro." Your consistent ignoring of this request demonstrates that you
don't know what you're talking about.
