Upgrading to a Student Volume License XP Pro

I am a contractor working with a University of Texas at Arlington faculty
member. We are attempting to upgrade his PC to Windows XP Professional from
Windows XP Home. He purchased a copy of Windows XP Professional with Service
Pack 2 Student Media Edition (with the Licensing hologram) from the
university store.

When I attempt to perform the upgrade to his operating system, it refuses to
accept the CD key on the back of the CD sleeve. We really do not want to
re-install everything from scratch on his PC as it is a Compaq that came
pre-loaded with certain software that is only available through the restore
partition.

Does anyone know why this key is not being accepted? Is there a way to
install this software without losing any installed programs and system
settings?

Actually thier is no "upgrade" from home to pro,the upgrade is for older
windows OS.You can install pro from home, however one must boot to xp
pro cd,select install xp,new copy,delete the partition (home),create one,then
xp formats and does a clean installation.Thiers no other way to go.....

Check the key carefully, and use a magnifying glass if needed--it is very
easy to confuse 8-B,6-G,.etc

Mr. Samuels is correct. I performed an upgrade (the option states "Upgrade
(Recommended)" on the menu) once I performed a "clean boot" as described in
the Knowledge Base. Everything is working correctly now. Thank you all for
your help.
