I'm going to be upgrading my PC tomorrow and wondered if it is worth getting an anti static wristband and what not. My floor is wooden and not carpet, and thought I could get away with it by touching a metal radiator or case.

Any help? I'm installing a new fan, RAM and an AGP graphics card.

You don't need one - a waste of money in my opinion, just touch a ground source like a radiator and you will be fine.

Always touching a radiator or every once in a while? And which part of the components should I touch?

I've built and upgraded many PC's and to be honest most of the time I don't even bother to touch any earth point - just be careful when handling the various components and avoid touching the contacts :thumb:

So only touch the top sides?

I'm worried about RAM, that's the problem.

Waste of time and money.

Unless you wearing plastic shoes all day on a nylon carpet, chances of static build up in your body are minimal.

Just ground yourself before you start, that's good enough.

22 years of handling IC's, have never blown one up through static. Have blown a few up through stupidity though

There's usually a little hole on the top of the graphics card which is safe to touch... what about RAM?

Static is not the "problem" when handling ram, keeping your oily mitts off the pins is ... not all you see is gold. ;)

I have built PCs for over 20 years, in the "early days" one was more worried about which jumper went where and did what ... all bloody 40 of 'em. We never even heard of anti-static straps. :D

If you are worried, just clap your hands together, that will discharge any static, or make you look foolish. :p

Just don't wear a woolly jumper and rub any balloons on it, you'll be fine. :thumb:

Not to mention Nylon Knickers ;)

Wooden floor gives almost no chance of static from building. Don't bother spending money on anti-static stuff... if you're really unsure just keep one hand on the case when fiddling with your computers bowels.

Oh with RAM do I need to fiddle with jumpers?
NO ... I was merely saying ... in my day we did ... you will probably not see any on a modern MB apart from the one that fecks-up your BIOS, leave them alone.

I have one "trick" that I have mentioned before ... take the fuse out of the power cable, then plug the power cable back into the mains & power supply ... you will then in effect have the case grounded, but no Live Power to the PC.

Don't forget to replace the fuse before turning or attempting to turn on the PC. ;)

If you dont lick/rub/powersand the ram chips or the gold connectors on the bottom, you will be fine. Touch the radiatior just for the sake of it - it pobably wouldn't matter if you didn't though. :)

Can I just leave the side of my case on the ground and touch that?

It's metal ^_^

You can touch what you want - I think we've more than covered this ;)

I think its time to move on,.........so locking :)
