upgrading my pc

hi,
I have a 4GB HDD running on PIII 450MHz, with windows 98. I bought a 40GB
HDD so that I would upgrade OS to XP now. I connected this new HDD as Slave .
But my system doesnot recognize this new space. Later I tried all
Master/Slave combination with existing hard disk and the new one, yet the
system doesnot accept this new hard drive. Where could things have gone
wrong? Please help.

Did you make sure your HARDWARE (BIOS) could handle a 40GB hard drive?

Don't even bother trying to load XP on that old clunker..even if it can be
made to recognise 40Gb of Hard Disk Space.

The CPU is too slow. Memory capacity will be too small [and again it
transfer rate also slow] and generally everyhting will be too historic.

You are better served saving your money until you can get at least 1.2Ghx
CPU: 256Mb RAM: 80Gb HDD a Mobo with high transfer rate between CPU and
memory [aka referred to a Front SIde Bus].

Look to the web for cheap used or reconditioned systems.

You have to prepare the drive before the space will be recognized.
Partition and format.

Hi, the disk in question has been formated.
could you please tell me where to look into the BIOS to make sure that my
board can take this 40GB space?

Does your BIOS detect a 40GB drive?
(In your system BIOS, in the hard drive list, does it show your new drive
and is it 40GB in size?)

The BIOS is gotten into (usually) by pressing DEL (or F1 or F2 or a few
other possibilities depending on your motherboard) right after you power on
the PC.. It should say "Press XXX to enter the System Setup" or something
similar.

It's that simple. If the hardware doesn't see the 40GB hard drive, your
Windows Operating System never will.

Dear Stanley and Kelp,
the new drive space is formatted and partitioned. i tested it at vendors
before buying.
the bios does not detect the disk as such. Does this mean it never will, or
do i have to configure soemthing else ? Please note that i have worked with
every possible jumper settings on master/slave combination.

Again.. If your HARDWARE does not recognize it - Windows never will
(alone) - you can use a utility that usually comes with the drive to
substitute for a decent system BIOS (hardware to recognize the drive size)
if you like - otherwise - I think you should have spent your money on a new
motherboard/cpu/ram combination. =)

Looks like I'll have to contain myself within 4GB for the time being.
Thanks for the replies anyway folks!....
