I am going to upgrade my motherboard and want to move my XP professional
system disk to a larger and faster drive. What is the best way to go
about transferring the files and will I encounter any problems with
Microsoft as this may be regarded as a new computer?

Thanks

Use your old drive for the first boot with the new mother board and do a
REPAIR install. NOTE do not use the recovery console. And do not try to boot
to the full OS without doing a repair install. Then use the software that
comes with the new HDD or download it from the makers website and copy the
old drive to the new drive. Most HDD makers have software to do this.
You could also do the copying to the new HDD before you install the new
mother board BUT you still need to do a REPAIR install at FIRST BOOT with
the new MB.

read Gary Woodruff's article on Files and settings Transfer at

With that much change, when it comes to activation (which you will have
to do if you format and re-install) , and if it is less than 120 days
since you last did so, you will probably have to phone in to do it - a
few tedious minutes. If over 120 days it will go through on the net as
first time
