System upgrade.

I am undertaking a system upgrade - new CPU, Motherboard, SATA HDD's (which I
want to raid 1) and video card. I want to transfer the data from my existing
IDE HDD rather than fresh install because of issues with re registering some
existing software ( all legal just a pain in the butt). I am currently
preparing a slipstream CD based in info I have read on this forum.
I would appreciate any advice as to problems I may encounter based on other
peoples experience in trying to do the as I am.

I built an entirely new machine a year ago and did NOT want to go
through the hassle of reinstalling/registering programs I've
accumulated over the years, so I cloned my old system disc to the one
I planned to use in the new machine.

I ran a repair install of XP and lucked out on the first try.

My new MOBO has both IDE and SATA connectors, permitting me to have 6
internal drives. My system drive is PATA, so I didn't have any
installation/repair problems with the SATA (installed it afterwards)
which requires special drivers for XP. You will probably have to have
those drivers ready on a floppy when you do the repair.

The manufacturer of your new drive should have utilities for copying your
old drive to the new one.

If you do a fresh install of XP, you'll have to re-install all your
applications.

I would use Acronis True Image to clone the old hd
There is still I believe an trial version on their site, fully functioning
You will still have to run a repair installation, after the clone, to
install the new drivers & raid driver from Floppy.
Ensure you have read the mobo manual on raid useage / setup as this varies.

Thanks for the replies. Was thinking of using Nortons Ghost as I have it
installed already.

Will ghost/clone SATA drive on old machince and leave IDE drive intact until
all working OK then reformat and use in another machine.

If you follow the instructions, and disconect the ide after clone has
completed, prior to booting from new sata then ide will remain intact.
Once your sata side is running correctly, simply shutdown, reconnect Ide and
all data will be still available
