Hi,

I just bought a new Motherboard and Processor to upgrade my computer.

Should I go about the business of connecting other hardware (i.e. hard
drive, PCI cards et. al.) and let Windows 2000 detect the change when it
boots up with this new motherboard and CPU, or is there anything I should
know about, be cautious of?

Thank you in advance!

You need to format and reinstall Windows. Then you need to install the
drivers that came on the cd with your motherboard. Then you need to
reinstall your programs. Plan for a weekend.

Is there any other way around this?
I have a harddrive with all programs/files/data that woud almost be
impossible to replicate by reformating my drive then after reinstalling
everything.

Please help.

Is this new mobo on the Windows 2000 HCL?

I disagree with Alias. You could certainly get some exciting results when
you do what you describe. I say this, because I have replaced mobos or even
simply moved boot drives to other systems. In the latter case, I could not
boot Windows, but had to boot from the CD, and run repair. Then the system
booted normally enough.

You might want to go into Device Manager before you remove the old mobo, and
manually delete those entries tied to your mobo and embedded devices (on
board video, sound, nic, USB), so long as you have the drivers in case you
need to roll back to the older mobo. Otherwise, you will retain some
settings and Microsoft knows what else from the old system. Then, after you
bring up the new system, go through Device Manager, and see if things are
good. You could still be in for a weekend of fun, if you have trouble
getting drivers for mobo components.

Thanks for the insight, especially on uninstalling devices first from the
Device Manager, before running Windows repair.

Just a Recap:

1) Uninstall devices: PCI cards, AGP card, Hard Drives, Disk Drives,
Floppy Drive.
2) Run Win 2000, do a repair install---> Restart
3) Before Restarting, replace old mobo with new mobo (and attached devices
from old mobo install to newer one mobo)
4) Power On

I would only recommend "removing" or deleting those devices that will be
gone with the new motherboard. Your PCI cards, AGP card, and disks drives
are all going to be part of this system, with the new mobo, right? So,
1) uninstall mobo components in device manager
2) replace old mobo with new, and attach devices
3) Try to boot.
3A) If Windows loads, you will probably need to load drivers.
3B) If Windows fails to load, then boot from Windows CD, and repair.

Of course, someone just posted a message, "Motherboard upgrade - Win2K fails
to repair, hangs at Config COM+...", where this approach fails them...

Your new mobo IS on the 2000 HCL, right?

The thing is, its not on the HCL! Its Soyo (400 FSB) KT600 with AMD 2800+
I see your point. I better braze myself.

The thing is, Soyo has only about 7 mobos in the list.
Hey, but thanks for all the input; I really appreciate the help!
