Upgrading from (yes) Outlook 97

Hello,

I've had Outlook 97 since, well, May 1998 at which time I'd also gotten a
free upgrade (via an outlooksetup.exe file) to Outlook 98. However, OL97 has
always served me well, so I'd been loathe to upgrade...until now because my
new ISP's SMTP server requires authentication, which OL97 doesn't support.

However, when I tried to upgrade, I got a message saying:

"Setup was unable to download information about available installation sites.

Setup may have been unable to migrate your current proxy settings. Click
the Advanced button if you know your proxy settings.

The network may be busy, you can retry now or if you continue having this
problem, please try setup at a later time."

Might anyone know what this is about as I do NOT have a proxy server (I'm
using a standalone PC on DSL -- is that what they think is a proxy server?)

Please let me know, and thanks.

I'm not sure if the OL98 files are still available online.

The location that Outlooksetup.exe tries to reference no longer exists. The
free upgrade to Outlook 98 was time-limited and the limit has long since
past.

Dear Vince,

Hello, and thanks for responding to my thread.

Yeah, that's definitely one possibility. I remember seeing (some years ago)
a page at microsoft.com called "Microsoft Office - Upgrading to Microsoft
Outlook 98" (http://www.microsoft.com/office/outlook/upgradefaq.htm), but,
when I clicked on it a few days ago, it came up as no longer in existene
(i.e., a "404" error).

I was hoping Microsoft didn't remove the files, that, at worst, they were
"moved" somewhere, but I looked on the Microsoft Office area of the Website
and couldn't find them. I fear you may be right, Vince, but I hope, in this
instance, that you're wrong.

Thanks again.

Dear Brian,

Thanks, I suspected that might have been what was happening.

I didn't recall hearing that it was time-sensitive. Rather, I always
thought I could upgrade at any time. Oh, darn...:)

Thanks again.

Hello,
Years back I downloaded the files to upgrade Outlook 97 to Outlook 98.
When I attempt to use these files to upgrade my current installation of
Outlook 97, the program attempts to locate the upgrade files from the
Internet instead of from my computer. Of course these files are no
longer located on the net and the install fails. Any help will be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

If you can get your hands on an Exchange 2000 install kit, Outlook 98 is on
that CD.
