You have not lived until you setup at least a dual boot machine.
All of my machines run numerous OS's...(Different versions of Windows
and Linux...OS/2 , BSD etc...)
Some by dual or triple booting...
others via removable drives.

When giving technical advice over the phone (or Usenet)
nothing like booting to the OS in question .
There are too many variations from one OS to the next to try to keep
it all in my head :)

Yep! I have only Windows XP and Vista installed on machines here. That's why
I hardly ever give advice on any other operating systems. I either know
nothing about them (like linux) or have forgotten what I once knew (like
most of Windows 98).

Thanks Philo and Ken. I decided that I'm just going to look into geting a
new computer. It would be worth it in the long run anyway. Thanks for you
time, it is much appreciated.

You're welcome. Considering what you've said about your hardware, I think
that's the best thing to do.

Ok then..
Though I have certainly built many new computers for other people...
all the stuff I use is basically discarded junk :)

Thanks. I read that if you install xp over windows 98se( not a clean
install, but just the "upgrade") that you'll have 30 days to insert your
orignial 98se cd and "activate" it. Can you confirm this?

You have 30 days to activate your Windows XP on either an upgrade
install or a clean install. Activation is done via the Internet or
by telephone to Microsoft. There is no need to insert any CD during
the activation process.

Good luck

Hello, I'm considering upgrading from Windows 98SE to XP. I figured if XP is
being replaced by Vista and I'm way behind as far as OSs go, then it's time
to upgrade. I want to upgrade as is, and I read that the Upgrade disc of XP
is cheaper than the first-time Windows installation CD. However, I wanted to
know before I purchased it, if I would need my original Windows 98SE disc. I
already have Windows on my computer, but I no longer have the original disc
(98SE was installed so long ago, I don't know where it is). My computer
itself is capable and is over the reccommended requirements to run xp. Any
help?

I have just done this, using an XP Home OEM disc. You have to do a full
install, (upgrade not allowed from OEM) but I was able to keep the existing
file system. This meant that all the existing directories were preserved, and
just the Windows directory overwritten. You will need to re-install all your
software (even if the executables for the likes of Word are left, the install
zaps the start up links, and you will need the original setup discs). I find
Open-Office a good alternative.
AFCPS make backups of everything, don't forget your emails and address books.
