Upgrading from nVidia to Ati - tips/hints wanted

P

Paul Moloney

I currently have a GeForce2 Ti and have just
bought an Ati Radeon 9800 Pro. Can anyone
point out guides to uninstalling one and
installing the other without pitfalls, such as
driver issues, etc (I know that nVidia
drivers can be hard to remove entirely).
Any info welcomed,

P.

When I upgraded from a nVidia Ti4200 to my ATI 9800pro I went the extreme
route and reformatted. However, using a program like Driver Cleaner should
be just fine.

Follow the instructions very carefully to ensure a proper removal of the
nVidia drivers.

What operating system has a lot to do with it. In Windows 2000/XP you
should go to My Computers/Right Click/Properties/click hardware button.
Find Video Adapters, and delete your INvidia. Click yes to all questions.
It will say you need to reboot. Answer no. Go to start and shut down your
computer. Turn off all power, open that baby up, pull out the old video
card, pop in the new on, power up and see if Windows 2000/XP finds it. If
it does answer know to all questions. Then put the cd that came with your
ATI card and run setup.

If you are running 95/98/ME you are on your own.

That's a fine approach, but you need to remove the old drivers, and then use
a driver cleaner to remove all the remnants.

IF, you want every peice of the old drivers off your system yes, that is
what you will need. Since Windows won't mess with the old drivers once a new
card is installed it is not mandatory. But VERY nice.

???

With Win98-ME - the installation setup is the same as WinXP....

Except - you should UNINSTALL your drivers from the ADD/REMOVE when
possible... not just simple remove the drivers from the system.

Detonator Destoryer is optional.

Well, I would not second that.

It's very advicable to removed EVERY scrap of old driver from the pc
as the un-installer forgot in my case to remove a few components,
components that automaticly started up after the reboot and caused my
ati card to run slow.

After re-installing windows, all was good and well!

did the same but to a 9600XT on Win XP
Downloaded the most recent ATI driver as I figured the CD would not have it.
Uninstalled Nvidia drivers from add/remove programs.
Rebooted
Ran detonator destroyer to clean any left overs. None was found.
Rebooted.
Installed the card and when XP detected it, canceled the XP wizard and
installed drivers from the file I downloaded, which will also install the
Multimedia center.
Use the custom install for the multimedia center or else ATI install will
grab all your multimedia file associations and take them over, which really
pissed me off. I had to go back and manually reassociate my mpg's etc.
If you dont care to go the download route then just install from the CD . No
sweat.

Reboot and you should be good to go.
Best upgrade I made for my games.
