I'm about to do that for a client and if your Me is as unstable as his is, I
would recommend reformat and clean install. If yours is stable, you've got
nothing to lose by trying an upgrade first. Do back up EVERYTHING you can't
afford to lose and be sure to run the Compatibility Wizard, and Scandisk and
Defrag first. Also make sure you have the XP drivers for your hardware, e.g.
printer, video, sound, etc. before doing anything. The Comp. Wiz. will tell
you what you need.

I would re-format, partition if it's not already and start from scratch.

Many people will undoubtedly recommend that you do a clean
installation. I disagree. Unlike previous versions of Windows,
when you do an upgrade with XP, it keeps very little of the
previous operating system. Upgrades over the top usually work
very well.

My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade; you have
nothing to lose by doing so. If it works well, you've saved
yourself a lot of time and trouble. Worst case, if problems
develop, you can always reinstall cleanly.

I would always do an upgrade in the first instance, starting by running
the XP CD from the existing system, Install and continue with Upgrade.
The system is almost entirely replaced and there is a very good chance
that this will work fine. If it does not you can still go back and do a
clean install: if you do that first you have burned your boats over
retaining installed software and the like.
