Upgrading from ME to XP

Ron

After upgrading from WindowsME to WindowsXP I had to
reconfigure Outlook Express. My Inbox files and Sent
Items files disappeared along with my addresses. Are they
sitting in some hidden file and can they be recovered?

It depends on whether you chose a New Install (which would clean you drive
of old files and the email will be gone), or an Upgrade Install (which would
save old files). If you chose to Upgrade and Save Files, click Start
button/Search/For Files or Folders. Search for: *.dbx (the Outlook
Express Folders are really files, such as Inbox.dbx etc.), when you find the
dbx files, take note of the path of the folder where they are. Then open
Outlook Express, click the File menu, click Import/Messages. When the
wizard opens select Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and then click the NEXT
button, then select the option to Import Messages from an OE6 Store
directory, then click the OK button, then click the Browse button and
navigate to the folder where you found the old *.dbx files (you'll know that
they're the correct *'dbx files by the size and dates of the files). The
rest of the Import/Messages wizard is self-explanatory.

I intend to do an new install....

Is it impossible to import my messages with a new install?

Why I can't I just save this dbx file before the installation and reinstall
it after the installation?

Hi Stuart,

Close OE right before you are ready to install XP, then export these four
keys onto a floppy:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

For each account you want to have the same mail settings, log into that
account. Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Locate the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities branch, right click it and select Delete.
Next open Windows Explorer and locate the 4 REG files you saved above.
Double click each one and answer yes to the import prompt.

Now you can open OE in any of the User accounts, and all the settings,
accounts, will be the same.

This was tested with the Mail and News Store on a FAT32 drive. I can't
guarantee it will work on an NTFS drive.

Note: You will need to re-enter the passwords for mail and news group
accounts.

Note2: If you use Signatures, you should put them in a text file and change
OE's settings to use them. Signatures are often corrupted during the
import. This is due to the Unicode storage of the signatures in the
Registry.
