Can I upgrade a computer from DOS to Windows XP or 2000
without having to wipeout the whole drive?

Hmm! Wasn't aware that Windows XP would even install on a fat16 partition!

It would - but would have to breathe in hard to fit.

I am left wondering it what was *meant* is that he has a system where he
can't boot the XP CD, and want to boot a DOS floppy (eg Win98 one) and
run the install from that. This is possible, but it would not upgrade
whatever system was on the disk. And if it was a system that supported
FAT 32 and was in working order, the upgrade should be run from that.

To do an Install from a DOS boot of that sort, run SMARTDRV
Then go to the CD drive, to the XP CD, give
CD \i386
WINNT

And when it gets to asking where it would be sensible to select and
delete the current partition (having backed up data before) and create a
new one - of sensible size, say 5GB plus
