UPGRADING FOR WINDOWS

My Dad is looking to upgrade his Videocard. He is not a gamer. He
currently has a ATI Radeon 7000ve. His system is an Athlon 2.0+ with 512mb
Ram. Is there any advantage for him if he switches video cards? And if
there are what would you recommend.

Depends what he uses his comp for.If he just browses the net and the one he
has is working and displaying a descent image which he is happy with then
there really is no need tbh.
If he is using other stuff then more info of what he is running/uses would
be needed.

If your dad is not a gamer, what is he looking for in an upgrade? 2D
performance, outside of possible PQ issues, is virtually identical for every
card on the market today.

Well he wondering if the added Video RAM from 32megs to 128 or higher would
help in anyway.

He uses it for spread sheets, burning CDs & DVDs, watching DVDs and the
internet.

not at all. the latest/greatest video cards are made for gamers, end of
story.

things like video-editing, video-capturing, photoshop stuff, 3D-rendering
etc.... it's all about the CPU, video cards are irrelevant at this point in
computing technology. your dad's card is beyond capable for what he wants
to use it for.

Thanks for a real answer.

Just out of curiosity: if he's not playing games, what is he doing with
his PC? 2D work? If so, why an upgrade? Or is he doing a lot of 3D
stuff like AutoCAD and graphical applications?

Archer: "Houdini could get out of this."
T'Pol: "Perhaps you should invite him on your next mission."

Picard: "Mr. Worf, do you know Gilbert and Sullivan?"
Worf: "No sir, I have not had a chance to meet all the new crew members
since I have been back."

Go with a 9800 pro, prices are good right now.
As to why he should upgrade, I was like him, 2d stuff like Photoshop
work, genealogy files, Internet, no games. Then on a whim I bought
Flight sim 2004, after installing a bunch of eye candy and extra files
for it I soon upgraded to a 9800 Pro. And now I have the demo versions
of Unreal2004 and Far Cry installed and playing, let the man have a
little fun, lord knows after putting up with you kids for all these
years we're worth it. I'm going for more ram next upgrade.

Well, obviously you would like to become a gamer on Dads machine.
No problem .... ATI Radeon 9600XT at about $140 to $150 now
is a good card for that machine. Also, add another 512 meg of the
same ram for about $60. Several places will bundle Far Cry
with the purchase ... Newegg, Mwave .. or at least Far Cry is
down to $40. You might also recommend a good set of speakers
like the Creative Labs set of 3 .. 1 bass, and two stereo. They
are around $30. Also, get an optical ps2 mouse ... good one
is Microsoft for $9 at Mwave .. very smooth. In Far Cry, set
the controls up: forward- Rmouse, fire-Lmouse, crouch-C,
toggle zoom-Z, leanleft-Q, leanright-W, use-E .... that is a
good Quake 3 setup, and something an adult won't find to be
intollerably stupid kid stuff. Other games at very good prices
now ... MOHAA, RTCW, CoD. This setup will interest him
and get him into gaming !!!! And there you go. When he
suggests a future upgrade, start telling him about the AMD 64
and NOTHING ELSE !!!!!! When he checks that out, he is
going to think you are a genius, and then I recommend the
ATI X800 .... maybe get a Dell, dude!
