Upgraded to XP SP2 with IE7, now cannot get to anything externally

After upgraded to SP2, when I open IE, it starts to load page and the IE just
closes down, same with any of the messager services. I tried upgrade IE to 7,
no difference and lastly I upgraded to SP3, still have the same problem. Any
suggestions. I have tried turning the firewall off as well.

Have you tried Firefox 3 or Opera?

Hi Dawn,

I would remove SP3, then IE7 and trouble shoot IE from there. If IE
still isn't working, remove SP2 to verify IE is working properly, then
reapply SP3. It sounds like already have SP1 so it's not necessary to
apply SP2 first.

Leave IE7 as the last thing to install so if you want to remove it, you
can. If you install IE7 before SP3, the only way to remove IE7 is to
uninstall SP3 first.

Download the full install of SP3 rather than using Windows Update:

No I have not but I don't get why it closes all messengers as well, ie. Yahoo
IM and AIM. I can get logged onto them, but then it just closes them both
down as well as the service.

I have uninstalled sp2 and sp3, it then works. I had the problem with IE6 as
well. It's like once I get sp2 on, the problem starts.

Hopefully you uninstalled IE7 in the reverse order as you described
(after uninstalling SP3 and before SP2).

If everything works properly now in the SP1 state, try downloading the
file above and reinstalling SP3.

Once you have uninstalled SP2, what Service Pack level are you at? SP1?
If so, follow Terry's advice and install SP3, making sure you use the
"Package for IT Professionals and Developers."

Also, make sure that your PC doesn't have any SP3 issues before you
install it. See:

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jes...ed-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx

When you are ready to install SP3, first physically disconnect your PC
from the Internet. Then configure a clean boot so certain programs you
have running in the background won't interfere with the installation:

Reboot. Install SP3. Undo the clean boot configuration. Reboot and
reconnect to the Internet and you should be fine. If not, don't hesitate
to post back.

1a. Uninstall WinXP SP3 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

1b. Uninstall WinXP SP2 via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis
log to an appropriate forum.

Check for Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe)
is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware.

**Post your HijackThis log to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30 or
other appropriate forum for expert analysis, not here.**

3. Do not install SP2* until an expert gives your HijackThis log a clean
bill of health.

========
* If the machine's running WinXP SP1, you can skip SP2 and install SP3.
