Upgraded from Windows XP Professional to Windows XP Service Pack 2

Guest

Hi,

I had Windows XP professional on my Home PC, then upgraded to Windows XP
Service Pack 2 (not professional). Not realising this would not leave the
professional part of the original version. But now I can't reinstall
professional. as it says it is an older version. What should I do?

thanks,

geoff.

Geoff;
You still have Windows XP Professional if you started with Pro..
Are you referring to the boot screen that originally have Professional and
now doesn't?
That is a change Microsoft made to standardize the screen on the 4 versions
of Windows XP.

Make a SP2 slipstreamed version of Windows XP
and afterward perform a "Repair Install" with the
new CD.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Since you cannot upgrade from Professional to another version of Windows XP
that I know of, you still have Professional. SP2 does get rid of any
markings during startup telling you Home or Professional, however.. Perhaps
you miss this?

No, there is no separate SP2 for Home and Professional. There is
a single SP2 for all versions of Windows XP, and that's what you
installed.

Not realising this would not
leave the professional part of the original version. But now I
can't
reinstall professional. as it says it is an older version.

You don't need to reinstall anything. If you had XP Professional
and you installed SP2, you're now running Windows XP Professional
with SP2. You can verify this by holding down the Windows key and
pressing the "Pause | Break" key. It will tell you you're running
Windows XP Professional with SP2.

If you ever need to reinstall Windows XP, because your XP
Professional Upgrade is without SP2, it is an older version than
what's installed. To reinstall it, you have two choices:
1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.

2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including
SP2, and use it. See

It removes the word Professional from the splash screen, but right click My
Computer and choose Properties.

Huh? The SP2 installation is identical for both and leaves all Pro
facilities still there. The Splash screen in SP 2 no longer says
'Professional' or 'Home Edition' - maybe that is confusing you
