I have a client that is using third party applications on
the same partition as the xp home operating system. He
need to upgrade to add this workstation to peer to peer
xp professional workgroup. Can I upgrade this existing
operating system and not lose the existing database or
programs on the machine? Many thanks.

Yes! Use the XP Pro upgrade! But as always, backup any important files,
just as precautionary measure.

The xp pro upgrade cd will upgrade from xp home to xp pro.
But, you may not need to. XP home will connect to a peer to peer workgroup
network with xp pro machines just fine. In a peer-to-peer workgroup network
the os doesn't matter. If you have a domain, then you need xp pro.

You can; but XP Home should be able to join in a peer workgroup net with
no trouble. It is a domain based net that it cannot formally 'join'
