Upgrade W2K from Win98

I am attempting an upgrade from Win98 to Windows 2k Pro. First, don't run
off on me about doing a clean install (Dave) :) I'm saving that as a LAST
resort. These people have a ton of software for their insurance business
that I prefer not to have to reload.

Here's the scenario. At their office I upgraded a Compaq Prosignia 330
successfully. Now i'm onto Comp #2 (the exact same PC, they were built at
the same time, both Cpq Prosig 330, same hardware, etc.) This computer
seems to be posessed. after about 3 hours of unsuccessful attempts, I
unplugged 'er and brought it home to fight with. There are 4 points in
setup that invariably stall out. It's random, too. There's no pattern to
this madness. The first freeze point is during the "Setup: Please Wait"
dialog box. If it happens to make it past that, it stalls during hardware
detection (generally after the screen flickers). On the rare occasion we
get past that spot we just make it past the regional settings and stalls
again on the next screen. My wife, at one point, got us so far as the final
configuration, but it stopped on her there. From this point all that can be
done is a hard shutdown and power on, at which point it says "restarting
setup................" and we play this roulette game all over again.

I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of. All ROMPAQ's from CrapPaq have been
loaded. All I/O cards have been pulled. I took this PC down to the balls -
keyboard, mouse, and display adapter. I disabled Power settings in BIOS,
disabled USB support, disabled all COM/LPT ports. Hell, we even tried
disabling the floppy drive. And it still stops responding randomly at any
one of the four points mentioned above.

I'm pulling at straws at this point and if I can't get it running soon I'll
probably have to reload from scratch but would avoid that if I can just
figure it out. What perplexes me is that Win2k upgraded FINE on the other
PC (which is, for all intents and purposes, identical). Any suggestions on
how I get this to complete setup?

Regards,
Scott

First thing, you'll want to check the HCL at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/upgrading/compat/default.asp
then check the pc,
mb, or bios manufacturer's web site for an updated bios (if required) If
upgrade is the only option, don't forget to uninstall any applications that
may need a compatibility patch, service pack, etc. These typically include
any anti-virus software. When in doubt, uninstall it. You can always
re-install it after the upgrade. This usually means that you might as well
do a clean install though.

Well, strangely enough this morning I tried again, and it actually made it.
Problem now is that it scrapped all user accounts and installed programs
(they exist in their original installation folders, but are not accessible).
It's as if setup treated this as anything BUT an upgrade. Any idea how to
restore this stuff??? If we have to reinstall all the software I suppose I
can deal with it (and would most likely reinstall clean OS), but would love
to hear any other solutions.

Thanks!!

If you lost all programs registration then it sounds like you may now have a
dual-boot.

Dave,

If i reconnected this PC back to the network at the office and copied the user profile from the other PC would that do the trick (ref KB# 234548)? I will check the settings now to see if it truly did set up a dual boot (no choice displays at startup, but I will check to be sure).

If all you're missing is the program shortcuts, then you can copy only the
shortcuts from
%AllUsersProfile%\Start Menu\Programs
or
%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs
or just recreate them.

I'm beginning to think there's a much nastier gremlin at work here. I gave
up the ghost and decided to clean install win2k. Walk with me...

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Right. The BIOS reports UDMA. Where would I have to go to get an updated
controller to force into the setup? Naturally, CrapPaq is of no help...

Well, I attempted a firmware upgrade for my HDD (Seagate ST317221A) which
said I was already up-to-date. Problem is I can't get into windows to
determine which Intel IDE Controller I have. Naturally, CrapPaq is again no
help... not only is the website useless, but the system is out of warranty
so they won't even TALK to you without a credit card number... God I wish
these bozos would quit buying factory put-together crap! LOL

Here's what I DO know. The system is a CrapPaq ProSignia 330 @750 MHz.
HDD: Seagate ST317221A. I did also determine that the controller is Intel

clean install Win2k (after failed upgrade)

This was as far as I could get at the hp site with what you provided.

These are from the Intel site.

Thanks... to get past the next options on hp's site, you'd select x750 (i
think it's 6750). I've been all over their site and they have nada
(although I did do the rompaq upgrade)... As for the intel links, I
downloaded some things from them, but most have to be installed from within
windows, or as i'm doing now, create a Windows 2k install CD that includes
the drivers in a subfolder and modify the unattend routine to include
them...

You might try disabling udma in cmos setup. See if you can get through the

I believe that you said you had another like computer. Look at device
manager on the other computer to see what the controller is.

You sure that the CD drive is working properly?
No scratches or obvious problems with the CD?
Have you tried disabling system and video cache?
Check to make sure all cables are connected properly?
If it is a Seagate drive you can go to their web-site and download SeaTools
to make sure that there is no HD problems.

Sorry all, problem resolved. Turned out the processor was fried. It worked
fine under DOS but as soon as you entered a windows state it started acting
up. Replaced it, no more problems! :) I was down to either that or the
Motherboard.
