I have a friend who has real trouble and heaps of registry errors with
Windows Millennium. If he upgraded to Windows XP do you think this would
sort some of the problems out?

Is an upgrade from Millennium to XP a simple process - i.e. download/install
and that's it???

Many thanks for your help.

No it will not fix his problems. It is never a good idea to do an upgrade
install over a problematic previous windows version. Most likely it will get
worse. A format and clean install would be the best bet.
BTW - their is no download for xp, it go to store buy xp, then install.

There is not a "download" that is available for Windows XP. You have to
purchase the software as either an upgrade or a full version. As far as
hoping that the "heaps of registry errors" I would advise getting the
problems with WinME fixed first and then consider moving to XP. The hope of
getting all the problems by doing an upgrade has BIG TROUBLE written all
over it. On an upgrade much of the settings and such will carry over into
XP. If your friend were to reformat and do a clean install (which would
remove EVERYTHING off their hardddrive that would be different.

Thanks
Jeff

I know it's anecdotal, but I just did this 2 weeks ago for a client. I cleaned
up Me as well as possible, ran the Compatibility Wizard, followed it's
suggestions, D/Led all the new drivers I determined would be needed, backed up
essential files, got me a Ketel One on the rocks, took a deep breath and ran
the Upgrade to XP Home. It all went well and he hasn't had so much as a hiccup
since. Oh yeah, I did have to reconfigure Outlook Express! I guess my point
here is that there is nothing to lose in trying an Upgrade. If it works you've
saved everyone a ton of work, reloading apps. files, etc. If not, you blow off
the HD and do a clean install.

John,
This is a perfect example of what I have been suggesting ever since XP was
released. If you do the proper preparations for the upgrade, it is more than
a little likely it will be very successful. Even with a flawed previous OS
to upgrade, running the upgrade advisor and uninstalling software/hardware
that is incompatible before running setup will usually work outstandingly.
My suggestion for all installs of XP is to prep for a clean install, then
select the upgrade path as the first option. The only two negatives of the
XP upgrade opposed to the XP clean install is a slightly larger footprint,
and if it is unsuccessful, you lost the time spent running the upgrade.

Quite possibly - provided they are not fundamentally caused by hardware
trouble. And badly designed third party software remains badly designed
third party software, though XP can usually contain the trouble better.

Yes, provided the hardware is adequate, and you take one or two simple
precautions - Read Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

And it is *not* a download - you go buy a copy of the Upgrade CD (Home
Edition most probably) at a good computer discount store
